I think the main theme of this story might be how "man is the wolf of the man", in fact, though it was the year 2026, a place in the future, with all the technology we would like to have, there is inevitable that man destroys himself, and shows also how not even the man's creation can save him from end. The story shows a little irony, because at the end, when all the family, even the dog, is already dead, the house is still "alive" and continues, we could say, with "it's life" without knowing or noticing, his owners and maybe creators, aren't there anymore. I think it shows how ironical life can be... after we are worried all the time because of material and valueness, at the end, we don't take anything with us, and sometimes, the things we created, are the cause of our end, and the only ones that remain.
